NO! they will remain unlocked indefinitely
Apple has an exclusive deal in the UK and most european countries – that means only one network indefinitely.
you can buy it on PAYG on O2. but don’t be tempted to ‘jailbreak’ to get unlocked networks – USE a SIM overlay (search iphone 3G SIM).
NEVER JAILBREAK! It causes so many problems and yet adds nearly nothing!
the 2.0.1 software form apple is stable and works well and lets you add hundreds of apps (many free) from the itunes App Store.
Jail breaking became redundant when the 2.0 software was released as it add almost nothing to the ipods abilities (other than the ability to browse its file structure which also makes it less secure).
Jail breaking also voids the warranty and does cause many issues form files vanishing, memory leaks and loss, rebooting and even failing to boot.
I’ve heard they have a 12 month contract which for obvious reasons won’t be up until next year where who knows if it will be opened up to other networks or whether it will go back to O2 and allow them to carry on fixing the price! Unlocking the handset is probably not a good idea as this can be fraught with problems, especially when upgrading the phone on line which I believe locks the phone again. I can’t say this info is 100% as I can’t remember where I read it but hope it helps a little anyway
soon (2 or 3 months) or you can buy one on contract and get it unlocked. (ask a phone shop if they will unlock it).
